Omaha Moms Blog :: Introducing Becka

Omaha

Hello! I’m Becka, born and raised in northwest Iowa but have since lived a little bit of everywhere including Illinois, South Carolina, South Dakota, and now Nebraska! In June of 2015 we packed up the car (imagine two wiener dogs, two infants, and a hatchback full of boxes cruising down I-29) and we moved to Omaha for two new career opportunities. My husband, Dijon, accepted a position at Creighton University and I at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. With a new city brings new places to eat, sites to see, and things to do. Add children to the mix and suddenly the list of things to explore in a new city doubles. Speaking of doubling, did I mention I am the mom of handsome two year old twin boys, Avery and Elliot? The city of Omaha is awesome for families. From a world renowned zoo, kid’s gyms, children’s museums, and excellent public parks and libraries it is easy to fill our weekends with family friendly activities. We are always on the lookout for affordable family fun.

I assume the role of mom to around 150 Nebraska College of Business honors students but after 5 p.m. two very sweet boys call me mommy. Avery (2014) and Elliot (2014) are identical twin boys with opposite personalities. Avery is introspective, stubborn, and strategic while Elliot is creative, people pleasing, and an instigator. I love that two little boys who share the same physical likeness have such differing dispositions, yet can be the best of friends.

As a working and commuting mom of young children I run through life full speed-figuratively-not literally (I leave the real running to my husband Dijon who is a seven-time marathon runner). With the demands of motherhood, combined with a 45 minute commute, and stressful work days I struggle to find time for myself and time with my husband. Being a mom is hard and being a mom of young kids the last thing that is on my mind is finding time for myself or collecting up the energy to leave the house on a date with my husband. I miss the days of sleeping in, binge watching Netflix, brunching with friends, and mostly just getting through my to-do list in a weekend rather than two weeks.

Moms of multiples (let’s not forget dads of multiples too) have such a unique perspective that is unlike any other. Yes, we are busy, yes we are tired, but as a mom of twins I have learned to be adaptable when I wish nothing more than predictability and a schedule. I have embraced adversity when all I want to do is close the door and start over. Most importantly, I have learned to ask for help. I am fortunate to have an awesome partner and wingman in the hustle and bustle of life. Dijon and I are truly a team, we have a subconscious ability to predict each other’s next actions or words, and we complement one another’s strengths and short falls without missing a beat. We are a well-oiled parenting machine, but it wasn’t always like that. When we first became parents we were a hot mess of emotions, frustrations, and confusion. It took us about 6 months and then our little family of four found our groove.

I am a very honest and transparent person and hope to show the real and raw side of motherhood. My toddlers are unpredictable which makes life very interesting. In their short lives they’ve pulled a fire alarm at Hy-Vee, got kicked out of a bounce house for wrestling, and have eaten enough boogers to upset even an iron stomach . In those circumstances, I ditch my pride, smile to myself, and think; it could be worse-right? My kids are not perfect and my parenting is seriously far from perfect. I hope to provide support and guidance to Omaha area mothers. Mostly, I want to reassure you that we all have rotten parenting days even when our intentions are authentic and our heart is in the right place. What you see is what you get from me, don’t believe me? Check out my family’s perfectly imperfect life on my Instagram.

Rebekah
Becka is an Iowa native who moved to Omaha in June 2015. She is one half of a higher education couple, a mom to identical twin boys (Avery and Elliot 2014) and two sassy wiener dogs (Nora and Knox). Becka enjoys the craziness of twins and the unpredictability of each day. Even with three degrees, most recently a doctorate in higher education, she continues to find herself googling things like “pachycephalosaurus + herbivore” or “excavator vs digger.” With two very energetic and curious preschoolers at home Becka enjoys the peacefulness of her daily commute to Lincoln where she is a coordinator in the Nebraska Business Honors Academy. Becka loves being outdoors in her garden, on the lake with her family, or sitting on the patio with a friend. Her kryptonite is diet coke, peanut m&m’s and a kid free Target trip.

  1. Hi Becka! Transparency is so important when developing relationships. So glad you are willing to talk about the real deal when it comes to motherhood. I look forward to reading your insights!

  2. Becka, I love the HyVee story. I’ve apologized with my eyes many times while leaving different establishments. 🙂 It’s nice to meet you!

    • Tessa, it is great to meet you too! Real talk-I was mortified when my child pulled the fire alarm but in those few minutes I felt the support and empathy of so many other moms in the store that it made me realize I am not alone.
