No, I am not talking about Gretna, Missouri just outside the city limits of Branson or Gretna, Louisiana population 17, 106. I am talking about Gretna, Nebraska, a rapidly growing town between Lincoln and Omaha often referred to as Nebraska’s boom town.
Population
Gretna’s population has nearly doubled over the past 16 years. This growth has created two types of residents. The first being the generational family. You know, the family who raised their kids when there was only one elementary. They are the families who own businesses in the community and temporarily may have left, but have willingly returned to their hometown to raise their own family. The second type of resident is the new wave of young families looking for easy access Omaha and Lincoln, but want the simplicity and character of raising their family in a small town. I am the latter type of resident and here are a few reasons why I love Gretna.
Gretna Breeze
The journalism geek in me loves a good hometown newspaper like the Gretna Breeze. Whether it is seeing your child’s jump shot captured in a full color photo in the paper, reading the latest school board minutes, or scouring the ad for McKinney’s Food Center, it brings us sense of simplicity and nostalgia to the everyday hustle and bustle.
Schramm Park
On the outskirts from metropolitan Omaha, Gretna offers some awesome outdoor opportunities. One of our favorites is Schramm Park and State Recreation. This park is truly a diamond in the rough along the rolling hills of the Platte River valley. A must visit!
Gretna Days
Gretna Days is a tradition which started over 50 years ago. Lasting three-days this festival showcases local businesses, live musical performances from area bands, fireworks, food from popular neighborhood food trucks, a dance party, a parade and inflatables for kids.
Nebraska’s Boom Town
Gretna is among the fastest-growing cities in the state and with this population boom, the town has gracefully maintained its small town charm while navigating a rush of new inhabitants.
