What I Love About Being a Mommy

I love being a mommy.

There are many reasons why this is true. It’s difficult to sum them up to a few! We all know how wild and crazy this journey being a mommy can be, but we also know it’s worth it.

Milestones

One of my favorite things about being a mom is witnessing my children reach milestones. There’s nothing quite like seeing your child succeed. I remember when my oldest was a week old, he would constantly flash me little smirks during his naps. I convinced myself that it was not, in fact, a gas bubble, but he was truly smiling because he was happy. That was the first of many exciting and happy moments for me as a mother. The milestones reached during the first year of life come so quickly and happen often that I used to be certain that there would be nothing as exhilarating as infancy. I realize how amazing each age’s new achievements are as each year passes. This year, I am blessed to witness so many different stages of life in my children. I have a 6 month old who I enjoy watching improvement in his fine motor skills. I have a 4 year old in his first year of pre-school who is beginning to recognize letters and is able to write his name. This year, I also have a 6 year old, which means it is my first time having a grade school student! Oh boy, has that been fun! My favorite milestone ever—listening to my kindergartner read to me.

Seeing the world through their eyes

Anyone who knows me personally knows that our family loves Disney (and love might even be an understatement). If you have visited “The Happiest Place on Earth”, you know that it is a safe place where adults can become children again and there’s no judgment. It’s a glimpse of seeing what life is like through the eyes of a child as you skip down Main Street and listen to the Dapper Dans. But, when you see the world through your own children’s eyes, it’s a whole new level of amazing. It’s unfortunate that our world has become downright scary, but children are blissfully unaware of that. When life gets me down, listening to my kids tell me about their day at school or playing a silly game with them allows me to see the beauty that still exists. My favorite time of the year is Christmas, which is when I get to witness the innocence and imagination of my three boys. I have always loved the holidays, but being able to see the magic of it through my kids has made it even better. Seeing them smile as they sit on Santa’s lap or the amazement they display upon seeing their Elf, Jack, move around the house day-to-day, is nothing short of pure awesomeness.

Hugs. Lots and lots of hugs.

Yes, yes, yes…moms of older kiddos, I know that hugs and kisses from them more than likely have an expiration date. But you remember them. For now, I am relishing in the fact that I still get them. Humans need physical touch—it is proven to release those feel good hormones and there’s nothing as sweet as a squishy hug or kiss from your little. The best part is that no matter how many times you get after your kids, they still love you dearly. They forgive and forget your morning meltdown (due to their morning meltdown), even if you don’t forgive yourself. I love sorting through school papers when they bring home the ones that say, “My favorite thing about my Mommy is when she hugs/kisses me.” It melts my heart every time. Sometimes, my kids will just randomly shout, “Mommy! I love you”, and it’s music to my ears. I will hate the day that my kisses will become an embarrassment, so you can bet your bottom dollar I’m going to do it until that day comes.
