“Sunny day, sweepin’ the clouds away, on my way to where the air is sweet. Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?”

November 10th is National Sesame Street Day. This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the original broadcast. It started in 2009 and the interpretations of how to celebrate are endless! Sesame Street

Sesame Street is widely known to almost everyone in the United States. It broadcasts in over 120 countries around the world. I think we can all identify our favorite character(s)…Snuffy, Big Bird, Grover, Elmo, Cookie Monster, Ernie, Bert, Abbie, just to name a few. The show was originally created to be an entertaining, educational tool to help underprivileged three-to-five-year-olds prepare for kindergarten. Access to episodes is pretty wide these days. You can find it airing on your local public television channels, cable, Amazon Prime, YouTube, PBS Kids App, and more.

“Come and play, everything’s A-OK.  Friendly neighbors there, that’s where we meet.  Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?”

Sesame Street BooksThe ways to celebrate #NationalSesameStreetDay are almost too many to count.

  1. Wear any gear you already own.
  2. Download a coloring sheet or game starting a favorite character.
  3. Check out a book or movie from a local library.
  4. Watch an episode!
  5. Learn a fun fact about the show. (Did you know Oscar was originally orange, or that Mr. Hooper’s name was Harold?)

Sesame Street Clothing

I personally remember watching Sesame Street as a child, and now I watch episodes with my three boys. When I would stay home sick from school, my mom and I would color a huge Sesame Street coloring book. Almost all of my kiddos have a character shirt, played with our figurines, and have favorite parts of the show. As a military family, we utilize the resource they put together for military families. They cover many topics from family health, deployment, and relocation, to friendship and birthdays.

Have a fabulous National Sesame Street Day!

Today I will live in the moment, unless it’s unpleasant, in which case I will eat a cookie.
