National Donut Day – Omaha Donut Round-Up

June 1, 2018 is National Donut Day!

Did you know this holiday began as a fundraiser for The Salvation Army in Chicago 80 years ago? The goal was to raise money for the less fortunate and to honor The Salvation Army “Lassies,” who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.

To celebrate, I’ve rounded up ten donut shops (in no particular order) in the Omaha area. Choose your favorite, and pick up a dozen to share!

Bob’s Donuts

3824 Farnam St.
Open from 6:30am to 2:30pm daily

Bob’s is small and quaint with very limited seating inside. If the weather is nice, find a seat on one of the benches outside. Unique donut flavors are served, and you can find gluten free and vegan options here.

Olsen’s Bake Shop

1708 South 10th St.
Monday—Friday, 7:15am to 2:00pm
Saturday 7:15am to 12:00pm
Closed Sunday

This little shop near the Old Market is very popular among locals. Bring cash. You’ll be charged a fee to use a credit card.

The Uptown Bakery

2229 Thurston Circle (Bellevue)
Monday—Tuesday, 5:00am to 11:00am
Wednesday—Friday, 5:00am to 4:00pm
Saturday, 5:00am to 2:00pm
Sunday, 5:00am to noon

This is a great spot if you’re in the Bellevue area. Arrive early in the day for the best selection. The glazed donuts and donut holes are light and airy, and the Fruity Pebbles donuts catch the attention of most kids. There is plenty of seating inside, so bring the whole family!

Mad Ox Bakery

215 West Broadway (Council Bluffs)
Monday: By appointment
Tuesday—Friday 7:00am to 4:30pm
Saturday 8:00am to 12:30pm
Closed Sunday

Mad Ox Bakery is in Council Bluffs, but it is definitely worth the trip across the river! Everyone will love the superhero decor and comics to read while digging into the donuts. The bourbon caramel pecan donut — with candied pecans on top — is a crowd favorite.

Jones Bros Cupcakes

2121 South 67th St.
Monday—Friday 7:00am to 9:00pm
Saturday 7:00am to 10:30pm
Sunday 8:00am to 8:00pm
You can also find Jones Bros at their Westroads Mall and Lakeside locations.

Jones Bros’s donuts are huge! The Aksarben location is bright and open with large seating areas indoors and out. It’s right across the street from Stinson Park, so you can easily take the kids to run off the extra sugar afterward. Street parking can be hard to come by, so swing around back and use the free parking garage.

Donut Professor

1919 Papillion Pkwy.
Monday—Saturday 6:00am to 12:00pm
Sunday 7:00am to 12:00pm
Donut Professor has a total of six locations in the Omaha area.

Donut Professor’s Papillion Parkway location has a great selection of donuts. I stopped by mid-morning on a Friday, and while I had the place to myself, there were plenty of sweet treats from which to choose!

Sunrize Donuts

17676 Welch Plaza, #7
Open from 6:00am to 12:00pm, daily

Sunrize is nestled next to the Hy-Vee on Welch Plaza. I have a soft spot for sprinkle donuts, but their crullers and apple fritters are on my wish list for next time! Parking is easy, and there is seating inside if you want to enjoy your donuts in the shop.

LaMar’s Donuts

17202 Audrey St.
Monday—Saturday 5:00am to 8:00pm
Sunday 6:30am to 6:00pm

LaMar’s is a great place to go if you want to sit inside and enjoy a cup of coffee with your donut. If you’re in a hurry, that’s OK, too. They have a drive thru! As an added bonus, if you’re interested in an adorable treat for family members of the canine variety, LaMar’s has them.

Donut Stop

1256 South 13th St.
Monday—Friday 5:00am to 10:30am; 8:00pm to 1:30am
Saturday 5:00am to 10:30am
Closed Sunday

Donut Stop is not only great for donuts, but if you need a place to hang out, they have board games for you to enjoy. This is also one of the few donut shops in town that is open late at night, so you can fulfill that donut craving no matter when it hits. (I’m looking at you, pregnant mamas.)

Jim and Connie’s Blair Bakery

132 South 17th St. (Blair)
Monday—Saturday 5:00am to 11:30am
Closed Sunday

Arrive early, because Jim and Connie’s in Blair sells out of the best donuts fast! Bring cash or check, and come hungry!

You can also pick up a free donut to celebrate National Donut Day at one of the three Krispy Kreme locations in the Omaha area on June 1st. Each customer will be given one free donut; no purchase necessary.

Audra
A Tennessee girl by birth, Audra has been following a man in uniform around the country for 14 years. She’s a mother of two “tweens” – Aidan (12) and Neely (9) – who has now called six different states home, landing in Omaha in July 2017. If anybody knows how to get to the heart of a town and find all the best activities for her family, it’s a military spouse! Audra’s passion is for travel, and she works from home as a travel agent, specializing in Disney destinations, cruises, and all-inclusive vacations. Other hobbies include running, soccer mom-ing, yoga, cooking, binge-watching old episodes of Friends, and exploring her latest hometown!
